Homes built before 1978 may have toxic lead-based paint.
Why it matters: Lead-based paint is a health hazard and must be handled properly.
🧠 In the know: Let’s hear from paint pro Andrey —>
When dealing with lead-based paint, there are a couple of things you can do.
- Hire a company with lead paint certification to do lead abatement. This is expensive but may be necessary in some cases.
- Seal the surface with a lead encapsulating paint. This is a multi-step process but is cheaper than full abatement.
🚨 Sealing is NOT recommended for traffic areas (floors and rails) or areas that rub (drawers and moving windows). Those areas require abatement.
🚨 Do NOT scrape or sand lead-based paint.
For your smart homeowner list:
✅ For pre-1978 homes, get peace of mind with a lead-based paint test kit.
👉 Pre-1950 homes have a higher risk
