Did you know most attic spaces are not vented correctly?
Why you should care?
Attic spaces trap both heat and moisture.
Excess heat = higher summer electric bills
Excess moisture = RISK
Moisture can damage and degrade everything in our attics, from
your holiday storage to your furnace/blower.
High moisture environments are breeding grounds for mildew and
mold.
To rid your attic space of excess moisture, you need proper
ventilation.
The architect may not have designed properly.
The builder may not have addressed it either.
After that, it’s up to your roofer to make sure ventilation is
correct.
Want the hard truth?
- Many roofers don’t understand ventilation.
- Roofers are not incentivized to learn this and do it correctly.
Here are the basic concepts:
- Attic spaces need balanced INTAKE and EXHAUST.
- The amount of both is determined by the size of the attic and
the type of ventilation. - Types of exhaust vents include ridge vent, turbines and power
vents. - Types of intake vents include soffit vents and deck vents.
That’s a lot to digest.
Tune in tomorrow for part 2! 🙂

Use this vent calculator tool to calculate your ventilation need.
Hint: Treat each attic space separately. Plug in the square
footage of each space — ballpark it if you need to.
