A crazy little moment on our walk the other day led to an Apple Watch fall detection alert on Danielleβs watch.
- Sheβs ok after being clotheslined by our dog who was lunging at a German Shepherd who was apparently looking at him wrong. π€¦ββοΈ
Why it matters: Falls are a big deal, especially as we get older.
- If fall detection senses a hard fall, your watch will give you the option of calling emergency services or dismissing the notification.
- If you fall and are immobile for one minute, it calls automatically.
πΌοΈΒ The big picture: Falls and other accidental injuries are among the leading causes of death in the developed world.
- Most falls occur in our homes.
π¬Β Zoom in: Instead of focusing on how to make our homes safer for us as we age (which is not a bad thing), I want to highlight what we can do to make it less likely that we fall and less severe if we do.
πΒ Eccentric strength β strong knee extensors work as our brakes and give us control as we walk downhill and downstairs.
- Watch Dr. Peter Attia demonstrate the step-up exercise.
πΒ Grip strength β a strong grip is associated with a longer life and gives us the best chance of catching ourselves if we lose our balance.
- Attia uses dumbbell grips to train this.
β Β For your Smart Homeowner list
- Todayβs message isnβt just for the over 50 or over 60 or over 70 group.
- We start gradually losing strength in our mid-30βs and can only overcome that with training.
- Check out Peter Attiaβs book Outlive to learn how to extend not just your lifespan but your health span.
Best,
Travis
