Construction is an ongoing, problem solving event — according to one of my early mentors in the field.
Why it matters: When you have work done on your home — from a new roof to a new kitchen to a new pool — you’re almost never prepared when things go wrong.
- Something always goes wrong.
🖼️ The big picture: How contractors handle problems is what makes the difference between a good experience and a bad experience, a good outcome and a bad outcome.
- I try to live by a mantra I learned from another mentor, “When a client calls with a problem, RUN TO THE PROBLEM.”
🥊 The bottom line: When you’re interviewing contractors to work for you, don’t ask to hear their success stories.
- Find out what happens when things go wrong.
✅ For your Smart Homeowner list
- Your contractor should be taking pictures before, during and after a job.
- But you should too.
- Ask your contractor to help you set expectations for the time the job might take, the things that can go wrong and how much of a mess they’ll make.
Best,
Travis
