๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿซย The insurance process โ€” Part 1

Stating the obvious: insurance only matters when you need it.

๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ The big picture: The process of filing a claim lacks clarity and certainty, often leaving the insured in a weak position.

  • Not knowing what to do or where to turn for resolution.

๐Ÿ”ฌ Zoom in: For this example, weโ€™re focusing on homeownerโ€™s property insurance.

  • The 2 foundational elements of every claim are:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Prove the loss โ€”> Was there a singular event that caused coverable damage?

  • If a tree knocked your fence down on Friday and hail damaged your roof on Sunday, those are 2 events โ€ฆ meaning 2 separate claims.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Define the scope โ€”> What materials and labor are required to return your home to pre-loss condition?

  • Even if a tree only damaged the left slope of your roof, your roof is a system and insurance will often pay for the whole roof to be replaced

๐ŸฅŠ Reality check: Results vary widely.

  • From one insurance carrier to another.
  • AND from one adjuster to another working for the same carrier.

โœ… For your Smart Homeowner list

  • Itโ€™s critical to work with a contractor who knows how to interact with your insurance carrier WITHOUT crossing the line into the practice of โ€œpublic adjusting.โ€
  • In complex situations, youโ€™re best resource is a licensed public adjuster (PA) who can legally review and advise you based on your policy.
  • A PA can either work on your behalf (typically on contingency) or can point you in the right direction โ€ฆ appraisal, legal, etc.

Best,

Travis
